Have we lost our Christian mind?

Romans 12:1-2

Have we lost our Christian mind?

Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;

(Knowledge comes before wisdom!)

fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

  • Knowledge = To know, acquire information to use!
  • Wisdom = To know with applied experience, knowledge used skillfully!

        (Like a craftsman).

R.C. Sproul wrote,

“We live in what may be the most anti-intellectual period in the history of Western civilization… We must have passion-indeed hearts on fire for the things of God. But that passion must resist with intensity the anti-intellectual spirit of the world.”

Doctrinal Truth has been replaced with Emotional Desires!

Think about it!  Today listen to most people who are looking for a church.  What is coming out of their mouths?   What meets their personal wants or real needs?  Is it a club mentality or a truth mentality?  Yes, we need social, emotional and personal needs met, but does truth come in last?  If so…

a slippery slop is on the horizon!  We can have many needs met at a social club, but the church is to truly meet those needs by living God’s holy truth and allowing God’s Word to be the bases for how we meet social, emotional and personal needs!

Two alarming OT passages about lacking knowledge caused God’s people to go into exile!  Noticed that the problem started with the leaders!  As a pastor I am very alarmed by the sighting of God’s Word here!  What does this mean to us, our future, and our offspring?

Isaiah 5:13 (Exile)

Therefore my people (Judah) are gone into captivity, because they have no (or lack) knowledge: and their honorable men are famished (Hungry), and their multitude dried up (Parched) with thirst. (Those blessed with resources would starve! )

Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

(Read Hosea 4:1-9) Verse 4-5 shows the leadership failed! The people were not taught Word!

So the Question I must ask this morning is…

Have we lost our Christian mind?

Luke 6:40

A disciple is not above his teacher,

but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

James 3:1

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers,

for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness

Everyone here who teaches others is accountable before God for the teaching that you teach!  Your students are going to be like you to some degree!  We have a duty to teach God’s truth and to have God’s answers!  What our students do with the knowledge is not our responsibility but we are responsible for what we teach!  We as a church are responsibility to have solid Bible based, no rather Bible saturated, all consuming Biblical materials for the learners!

Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up,

just as you are doing.

2 Timothy 3:15-17

and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.  [16] All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  [17] that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work!

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active,

sharper than any two-edged sword,

piercing to the division of soul and of spirit,

of joints and of marrow,

and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not lean on your own understanding.

[6] In all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make straight your paths.

A Key scripture for teachers, it applies two ways!

For the teacher and student alike!

Teachers and students alike can become puffed up with pride and think they got the words of understanding.  Yes we need to be critical thinkers, but our critical thinking must be through application of God’s truth!  We can be critical thinkers because we know God’s Word.  There are many critical thinkers who are not Christians born of the Spirit of God.  They can think critically through the gospel and never see the truth of the Word unless they are born of Holy Spirit!  Anybody who has unbiblical ideas are not right in their thinking!

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all (Your complete heart) your heart,

and do not lean (Put your weight) on your own understanding.

[6] In all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make straight your paths.

Our heart must be devoted to God’s Word, not our own words!  As teachers we need to teach our students God’s word and how to think for themselves through God’s Word!  Don’t throw an idea out to the students without the Word of God being the goal for understanding.  Don’t throw ideas out without God’s Word being given for them to use to grow in the truth!  If you don’t now what God’s Word say’s find out, be ready, be equipped!  You will be judged by the idea of equipping the saints!

James 3:1

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers,

for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

Trust in the Lord, NOT IN MAN or SELF!

All our ways we must trust in God’s Word!

Teachers and students alike, Ask what does God’s Word say about everything!

1 Peter 3:13-17

Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?  [14] But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,  [15] but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;  [16] yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.  [17] For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

Teachers and student our goal is to grow through God’s Word!  Not mans ideas!

Matthew 22:37-38

And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  [38] This is the great and first commandment.

“The church today is more guided by feelings than by convictions.  We value enthusiasm more than informed commitment!”     (Gallup poll on religion)

Puritan Cotton Mather said:

Ignorance is the Mother not of Devotion but of HERESY!”

“Everyone here this morning who comes to church but doesn’t listen to what God’s Word is really saying is open to heresy!  Those who don’t read God’s Word daily are more likely to accept heresy in their lives and not even know it’s happening to them!  Those are my word’s of personal conviction!”

Romans 12:1-2

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual (act of) worship.  [Rational act of worship]

[2] Do not be conformed to this world,

but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,

what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Last Point:  We are all teachers on some level!  When talking about spiritual things to our children, family, friends, whoever make sure it’s based on God’s Word, not mans!  Take a stand on what is true!        AMEN!
