Out of The Mouths of Babes comes Praise!

September 18, 2011

Out of The Mouths of Babes comes Praise!

Matthew 21:13-17

And He *said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbers’ den.”

14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple (Area of the Gentiles), and He healed them.

15 But when the chief priests and the scribes SAW the wonderful things that He had done, AND the children who were shouting in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant!

16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these children are saying?” And Jesus *said to them, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself’?

17 And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

So far we began this chapter with the Triumphant Entry followed by last week’s teaching on the cleansing of the Temple area of the Gentiles.  Hopefully we recognized last week that when God gets mad, it is because it is warranted and within His Holy character, He has every right and He should be angry when our worship does not align with His Holy Word (Will)!  Also with God’s Spirit within us believers, we too should be angry at unholy worship towards God Almighty!  Worship should always have a goal of pleasing God and Glorifying His Holy Name!

This brings us to our scriptures this morning…

Matthew 21:14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple (Area of the Gentiles), and He healed them.

We begin still located at the Temple area of the Gentiles.  People start coming that were blind and crippled TO HIM because it wasn’t the chief priests or scribes at the Temple area who could heal them but Jesus alone!  They couldn’t do these great miracles by healing the people nor had the ability to do that.  It was Jesus who was doing the healing and forgiving people all over and the Word was out, it was obvious.  So these blind and crippled people came to the only One who they had hope in to heal them and He does!  It must have been amazing point of history to experience.  They saw the obvious that people were healed and there was no denying Jesus was the One doing it in full view of all and they all were witnesses to this fact!  But the FACTS and OBVIOUS was suppressed by the chief priests and the scribes who DID SEE the wonderful things that Jesus had done and was doing!

Read with me the reaction of the leaders in the Temple area…

Matthew 21:15 But when the chief priests and the scribes SAW the wonderful things that He had done, AND the children who were shouting in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant!

“they became indignant!”  KJV “they were sore displeased”  The Greek is to be greatly afflicted or moved with indignation!  Most translations use the word “indignant”.  This word means basically in this context to have anger aroused by something unjust or unworthy in their sight!  Here we see how all the evidence in the world can be done in ones sight and still not see the spiritual side!  Yes they see that Jesus is healing but don’t recognize or they suppress the truth that God is in their midst doing these great miracles of healing!  Romans 1:18 tells us how men can deny the truth about God, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness!”

I am also reminded here of the scripture from 1 Corinthians chapter two beginning with verse twelve to the beginning of fifteen…

1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,  13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.  14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.  15a But he who is spiritual appraises all things!

What is SPIRITUALLY APPRAISED?  It is to be able to figure out the worth of something!  To be able to judge the significance or value of the situation!  When we look at the scriptures just read we see that the unspiritual, the one who has not received the spirit of God, cannot appraise the spiritual.  That is they cannot understand the value or worth of what they have seen or read from God’s Word.  BUT the Spiritual person appraises ALL THINGS!  Do you see the big difference between the mouth of babes praising Jesus and the spiritual leaders who were truly dead spiritually and unable to appraise the situation correctly!  Jesus already taught us in Matthew 18:1-4 who are the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven…

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them,

3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.  4 “Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Jesus was teaching the childlikeness attitude of the believer.  There is this trust, confidence and need of help before God that is simply accepted because there are no preconceived ideas taught to throw them off course away from God…yet!  A childlike faith humbles oneself before God and accepts His will for their lives.  Childlikeness is not immature in attitude but willingness in attitude!

See the point is the chief priests and scribes saw but only physically, and definitely not spiritually!  They suppressed what was obvious and they were blind spiritually and not able to see because they were indignant instead of praising Jesus for His glorious work of God!  So instead of seeing the worthiness of worship they point out the obvious praise of the children, and were upset by this because they (chief priests and scribes) did not recognize the work of God in their midst!  Out of The Mouths of Babes comes Praise!  Out of the mouths of the learned spiritual leaders came indignation!

This is what they said to Jesus…

Matthew 21:16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these children are saying?” And Jesus *said to them, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself’?

The Chief Priest and Scribes see all this and are upset over the children praising Jesus for who He obviously is!  Jesus responds with the prophesy from Psalm 8:1-4

1 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth,

Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!

2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength.  Because of Your adversaries,

To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.

3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,

The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;

4 What is man that You take thought of him,

And the son of man that You care for him?

What a great passage and we even sing songs about this today!

What is really interesting is the context of the psalm talks about how God’s creation shows the obvious, the majesty of God!  And Jesus points to the obvious majesty of Jesus the Son of God!  The full verse in Psalm 8:2 says…

From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength.  Because of Your adversaries,

To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.

Jesus referring to this psalm seems to point to how awesome God is in His creation and how Jesus can restore the effects of the Fall on mankind!  If one just would recognize as the babes do, the work of God in Jesus, they also can be restored from the effects of the Fall on mankind!  In this case we see the weak children NOT SILENT before God, but the powerful leaders are WITHOUT PRAISE to God.  Jesus explains they are enemies of the TRUTH standing before them!  It is as if our Lord is saying you get indignant because you don’t see what the children can see.  Your learning and traditions of men have blinded you from seeing the obvious!  Look at the scriptures and see they are doing just as scripture prophesied the children would do this day before you!  Are you ready to humble yourself before God and Praise Him?

Jesus reaction to their denial is in verse 17…

Matthew 21:17 And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

He left them in their denial of Him!

We come to this section of scripture with a message from God that He obviously has shown Himself to be Lord God and yet many and even the educated will sometimes reject Him.  But if we would just open our eyes and come without preconceived and biases against Jesus in our minds and just look with our eyes and hearts at what our Lord has and is doing today we would hopefully see the TRUTH!  Jesus is God in the flesh and came to save us from our sins!  If we know this truth and it has been applied to our lives we will also praise God,  just  as out of Babes mouths in Christ Praised comes, so out of our mouths praise towards our Lord God is given!

Hopefully this morning we all saw the PRAISE of children, the PROTEST of the unbelieving, and the PROPHECY that confirmed the TRUTH that Jesus Christ is Immanuel, God with us!  It is through the Word of God that all truth is revealed as it records the Historical accounts of God’s History with His people!  If we are God’s people we relate to the Holy Scriptures and all they teach us and we all can say a hearty heartfelt…

AMEN, to that!
